Quick answer
If you only have a few eligible items and can leave them outside for collection, the council route may be enough. For indoor removals, mixed loads, urgent jobs or awkward access in Gosport, private clearance is usually the more practical option.

What Gosport Council currently chargesSection titled What%20Gosport%20Council%20currently%20charges
Gosport Borough Council runs a chargeable bulky household waste collection through its Streetscene service. For a standard booking, the first item costs £35 and each additional item costs £25, covering up to 5 items in one visit. If you have more to clear, or something not on the council's standard list, Streetscene can arrange a free estimate for 6 or more items. Payment has to reach Streetscene before the collection date, so nothing is collected until the booking is paid for.
A 50% discount applies to residents receiving certain means-tested benefits, including Pension Credit (Guaranteed), Housing Benefit, Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance, or Disability or Attendance Allowance. Sofas and armchairs (classed as Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating) are collected on a separate Thursday round rather than the usual Tuesday collection, and the service cannot take hazardous waste at all.

Council prices and rules change. Always recheck the official Gosport Council page before booking.
You can check current fees, eligible items and how to book on the council's Bulky Household Waste Collections page, or by calling Streetscene on 08000 198 598. If you'd rather take items yourself, the Household Waste Recycling Centre accepts most bulky household items free of charge. Prices and rules can change, so it's worth checking the official page again before you book.
The rules that matter before you bookSection titled The%20rules%20that%20matter%20before%20you%20book
The headline price is only part of the picture. Whether the council route actually works for your job usually comes down to where you can leave items, how early they need to be out, and what happens if plans change — not just the cost.
Where items must be leftSection titled Where%20items%20must%20be%20left
Gosport Borough Council collects bulky items from outside the front of the property only. Items need to be out and ready by 7am on the day of collection, with the crew working through their round any time between 7am and 5pm, so there's no fixed appointment slot, just a collection window. Rear access is only used where there's suitable vehicle access, and this needs to be agreed with Streetscene beforehand.
Crews do not enter the property to collect items — if something is still upstairs, in a shed, or through the house, you'll need to move it outside yourself before collection day. The service also covers household waste only; items from a business or rented commercial unit are not eligible.
Changes, refunds and assisted collectionsSection titled Changes%2C%20refunds%20and%20assisted%20collections
Streetscene needs payment before it will confirm a collection, and the Bulky Household Waste Collections page doesn't publish a fixed cancellation or refund window for bulky bookings, so it's worth calling 08000 198 598 to check before you pay if your plans might change. The council also runs an assisted collection service for residents who cannot present their own bins or items and have nobody else at the property able to help — this normally needs a written request to Streetscene, with medical evidence for mobility-related requests. It's set up for routine bin collections, so if you think you'd need this kind of help with a bulky item booking, confirm with Streetscene first rather than assuming it's included.

When the council service is usually enoughSection titled When%20the%20council%20service%20is%20usually%20enough
The council route tends to work best when the practical requirements are easy to meet:
- You only have one or two eligible items, such as a mattress, wardrobe or white good, on the council's bulky waste list
- The items are already outside, or you can comfortably move them outside yourself before 7am on collection day
- You don't need a fixed collection time and can leave items out for the whole working day
- You're happy to wait for the next scheduled Tuesday (or Thursday for sofas and armchairs) round
- You qualify for the 50% discount and want the lowest possible cost
- Your items fall within the council's 5-item limit and contain no hazardous materials
When private clearance is the better optionSection titled When%20private%20clearance%20is%20the%20better%20option
Private clearance usually makes more sense when the job doesn't fit neatly into the council's rules:
- Items are still inside the property — upstairs, in a loft, shed or garage — and need carrying out
- You have a mixed load of furniture, appliances and general waste rather than a short list of named items
- You need everything gone quickly rather than waiting for the next scheduled council round
- Access is awkward — narrow stairs, no vehicle access for a rear collection, or a block of flats
- You have more than 5 items, or items not on the council's accepted list
- You're working to a probate, tenancy or house sale deadline and can't risk a missed or delayed collection

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions
Is Gosport Council's bulky waste collection cheaper than private clearance?Section titled Is%20Gosport%20Council%27s%20bulky%20waste%20collection%20cheaper%20than%20private%20clearance%3F
For a single small item, the council's £35 first-item charge is usually the cheapest option, especially if you qualify for the 50% discount. Once you have several items, a mixed load, or anything still inside the property, the £25-per-item charge plus the effort of moving everything outside yourself can end up costing more time than a single private clearance quote that includes carrying and disposal.
Will Gosport Council collect items from inside my house?Section titled Will%20Gosport%20Council%20collect%20items%20from%20inside%20my%20house%3F
No. Items must be left outside the front of the property by 7am on collection day, and crews do not enter the property to collect them. If items are still inside, you'll need to move them yourself first or arrange a private clearance team that carries items out for you.
What happens if I have more than 5 items or a mixed load?Section titled What%20happens%20if%20I%20have%20more%20than%205%20items%20or%20a%20mixed%20load%3F
The council's standard bulky waste booking covers up to 5 items. For 6 or more, or anything not on the standard list, you'll need to request a free estimate and arrange a suitable visit with the council's contractor. For a genuinely mixed load of furniture, appliances and general waste, a private clearance service is usually simpler, since it can take everything in one visit rather than needing separate bookings.
